Rolled canvas arrives without being mounted on stretcher bars and needs local stretching or framing. Stretched canvas is mounted on a support, usually wooden bars, without an additional decorative outer frame. A framed canvas adds that outer frame around the stretched painting. The choice affects what arrives, the work needed before installation, and the finished dimensions on your wall.

Compare what each option means

Rolled canvas

The painted canvas is supplied without stretcher bars or an outer frame.

Confirm: Suitability for rolling, stretching allowance, local framing quote, and final image dimensions.

Stretched canvas

The canvas is mounted over stretcher bars, with no decorative outer frame.

Confirm: Depth, edge finish, outside dimensions, and supplied hanging hardware.

Framed canvas

A decorative outer frame surrounds the stretched painting.

Confirm: Frame finish, outside dimensions, total depth and weight, and hanging hardware.

Rolled canvas: plan the next step before ordering

This option can make sense if you already work with a local framer or want to choose a presentation in person. Ask that framer for a quote before deciding. The artwork price is only one part of the finished result; stretching, framing, transport to the framer, and installation may add costs and time.

Tell the framer about the painting’s size and surface. Heavily textured works need particular care, and not every painting is suitable for rolling. Ask the seller to confirm the appropriate delivery format for the specific work. Keep the packaging and handling instructions, and arrange careful professional unpacking when needed.

Stretched canvas: confirm what “frameless” includes

A stretched painting can show its wrapped edges without an outer frame. That can give the image a direct presence on the wall, but the edge treatment and depth will influence the result.

Product menus do not always use identical names. If an option is labeled “Frameless,” confirm that it means canvas mounted on stretcher bars rather than loose canvas. Also ask whether hanging hardware is included. Mounted canvas and installed artwork are separate stages; your wall type and the artwork’s weight still determine the installation method.

Framed canvas: measure beyond the painted surface

An outer frame creates a boundary around the work and adds to its overall dimensions. Compare the finish with nearby wood, metal, and painted surfaces, as well as with the artwork itself. A frame does not need to match every other object in the room, but it should be a deliberate part of the composition.

If the fit is tight, request the finished outside width and height. Do not assume that a listed canvas size is also the final framed size. A frame’s appearance in a product image does not replace the finish selected in the product options.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Choose the artwork and approximate size.
  2. Decide whether you want a local framer involved after delivery.
  3. Confirm the material, delivery format, and any restrictions for the specific painting.
  4. Compare the total cost and time needed to reach an installed result.
  5. Confirm outside dimensions, weight, and hanging hardware before ordering.

For a multi-room project, record the presentation choice beside every artwork. Mixing rolled and framed selections without recording them can create surprises when the installation team starts unpacking.

Choosing an option at Avoryne Art

Current Avoryne Art product pages show Rolled Canvas, Frameless, and selected Stretch + Frame finishes. Check the choices available on the particular painting rather than assuming every option applies to every artwork.

Our artwork and framing FAQs explain the general delivery formats. For the exact material, final outside dimensions, or hanging hardware, contact our team before ordering. If you are specifying several pieces for a client, include those details in your Trade Program inquiry.
